Uproar, as Army insists on ‘Operation Identify Yourself’

ABUJA — Various groups and notable persons yesterday rose against bid by the Nigerian Army to get all citizens identify themselves in a planned exercise tagged Operation Positive Identification, OPI, just as the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, yesterday told the House of Representatives that the Army’s insistence on the exercise was targeted at members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

By Emeka Obasi Renowned author and Political Scientist, Professor Okwudiba Nnoli, is very much around and bubbling with life at 81. As an icon at the University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania where he taught in the 1970s, many students who graced his lectures still hold the Nigerian in high esteem. One of them, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, moved from campus to  the bush and by 1986 emerged as President of Uganda. I wrote about this in my column last Saturday and due to circumstances that have continued to torment me, Prof. Nnoli was referred to as ‘now late’. I have heard of printer’s devil. Typo error is also common place. This one hit me hard. By the time I realized the monumental mistake I found it difficult to exist as a complete being. The Kwara Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has said that preparations for the 2021 Hajj operation for intending pilgrims willing to travel with the board will commence on September 7. Alhaji Mohammed Tunde-Jimoh, the Executive Secretary of the board, said this in an interview with the newsmen in Ilorin recently. Tunde-Jimoh said the board had mapped out a strategy to ensure a hitch-free Hajj for intending pilgrims for the 2021 holy pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. He said that only 100 of 1,800 intending pilgrims, who paid their Hajj fare for the aborted 2020 Hajj, had so far requested for refund. He assured that the remaining 1,700 who rejected refund would first be considered in the 2021 Hajj operation. “Intending pilgrims for 2020 Hajj, who did not collect their money had taken the right decision. “This is because Saudi Authorities may reduce the number of intending pilgrims and the board will first treat those that left their fare with us,” he said.
